Why We All Need More Art in Our Lives

For as long as I can remember, artistic pursuits have been a huge part of my life. There are times, both past and present where I’ve either slowed down creating something artistic, or have switched to trying a new form of art. From those very first moments of my mum teaching me how to draw and colour, through my high school years of drawing and painting, to me studying and qualifying as a graphic designer, something which I still do today, and to me now creating art photographically, I have always had art in one form or the other in my life.

The process of creating something beautiful and life changing has always had a sway on the direction my life has taken. I’ve created my businesses around my love of art and creativity, and I continue to be inspired in many aspects of my life by not only my own art, but that of others I actively seek out to find.

In today’s world, we are constantly being told that art is not important, that there are more pressing matters in the world that need to be taken care of. I see it happening in schools, where budgets for artistic and sporting pursuits are being stripped away. I often hear it from people who I sometimes come into contact with. However, the truth of the matter is, that art permeates every part of our lives, whether we realise it or not. It not only provides beauty, but it also has the power to provide answers, communicate to us without the barrier of language, to inspire and inform, to illicit emotion and perhaps more importantly to be a catalyst of change in our lives.

Whether we realise it or not, art is everywhere. It can be found anywhere from the logo on your favourite garment, to that snazzy car that you drive around in. At some point, everything functional that we create, needs a creative touch to make it desirable, beautiful and recognisable.

A world without art and design would be very dull and uninspiring. Having all these various forms of art fills us with gratitude, and an inspiration to create and admire even more. It gives us a sense of purpose and individuality, after all, we each have our own idea of what constitutes art. Whatever that idea is, it should be nurtured and allowed the space to create a happier existence for ourselves. No one form of art should be thought of as greater than the other, even if you are swayed to admire one more than the other.

The creation and appreciation of art should be cultivated in every one of us. Use all the senses that have been given to you to appreciate beauty. Talk about it, share it with others, and create an environment that celebrates and appreciates art. Art is not something cheap or frivolous, it takes talent, purpose, drive, technical know-how, equipment and an atmosphere that’s conducive to creating art in order to thrive. Creating art and supporting artists and their art is a noble pursuit that improves the quality of life for all.

I hope that on a personal level, my photography and design work inspires you to seek out and enjoy art. I also hope that it makes you want to create some of your own, it doesn’t have to be photographic art either. Whether you choose to paint, sculpt, write poetry, create folk art, etc. I believe you should allow yourself the space to create your own art. Even if you don’t feel that you are artistic, you can still find ways to be a part of the creation of art. Many artists are always on the lookout for people to collaborate with, whether it be as a muse, model or simply for idea generation. It is not uncommon for a person to have an idea but not the ability or know-how to bring that idea to fruition, enlist the help of an artist. As both a photographer and graphic designer I do that on a daily basis. I have people approach me and purchase my services all the time, wanting to be part of that process of creating art, and I’m always happy to include them in that process.

It is an important ideal for us all to create, express and give life to our own ideas of beauty and art, because it feeds the heart, mind and soul with Love.
