Equipment Review – Elinchrom D-Lite 4

I frequently get asked by both amateur and professional photographers what lighting equipment I use. So I decided to write a review of the Elinchrom D-Lite 4’s that I use. While I use version one of these studio strobes, the information is still relevant. The reason I say this, is that Elinchrom make such good quality photographic lighting products, and secondly, studio lighting is an investment that will last you for years. Essentially think of this as a long term review…;)

The Elinchrom D-Lite 4’s are considered to be base models, but don’t let that fool you, they still produce excellent light and have a constant light temperature. You can mount all the same kinds of light modifiers that you can on more expensive models, just make sure that they fit the Elinchrom mount or there’s an adaptor available for them.

On the version I have there isn’t any cooling fans, the newer models do have them, including various new additions. I must say though, that even as a frequent shooter I have never had the lights cut out on me from over-heating. There have been days where I’ve shot in the region of two thousand frames in a single day, and the Elinchroms just kept on firing. I’ve used them outdoors in various weather conditions too, just be responsible and don’t use them when it’s raining. With the aid of a petrol generator, I’ve been able to use them in many locations where power wasn’t readily available. That in itself has been great, because it meant I was not limited to working in the studio and I could create photographs that had variety in them.

What I love about them is the consistency I get. Once I’ve dialled in the amount of light I want, set the white balance on my camera, shot after shot looks great. This in itself means that I spend less time behind the computer worrying about getting a set photographs to look consistent in terms of brightness and colour.

The controls on the back are all digital, you can change the light output in 1/10 of a stop light increments. In this way you have greater control over the amount of light hitting your subject. The digital readout is easy to read, even in darkness.

The lighting units themselves are quite light, this is good because you can easily mount them on to a boom stand. It’s also great for travelling and in situations where you have to carry equipment to locations, which are not easily accessible.

Having used these lights for around seven years now, I must say that I’m very satisfied with them. These are definitely one of my most successful photographic gear purchases. They’ve performed exceptionally well and have never had any reliability problems with them to date. The only time I had to send one of the lights in for repairs was because of my own fault. I tripped on the cord in the dark and the light came crashing down. Luckily not on the model who was posing for me. The mount broke because of the weight of the fall, that however was replaced within a day and couriered back to me by the business I originally bought the lights from.

If you look after these studio lights, they will perform very well for many years, along with good quality lenses, these should remain in your kit for a long time. So if your are in the market for studio lights, I can definitely recommend the Elinchrom range of products from personal, hands on experience with them. If I were to buy lights again, I’d gladly buy these again. I’ve pretty much built my business using them.
