10 Tips for a Healthier Lifestyle

1. Don’t Skip Breakfast

Eating a proper breakfast can be one of the most positive things you can do, especially if you are trying to lose weight. The body needs to refuel after sleep, so make sure to have a healthy balanced breakfast, one that consists of either a fresh fruit or fruit juice, a high fibre breakfast cereal with either low fat milk or yoghurt, whole wheat toast and an egg, preferably boiled.

 2. Neurobics for you Brain

Get you brain energised by doing tasks that activate the brain’s chemical pathways and also to bring new pathways online. This can help to improve mental fitness, including memory. Changing the way you perform tasks is a good way to exercise the brain , try brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand, take a different route to work, set up a chess board in your home and allow anyone who passes by to make a move, or try brainstorming to force the brain to come up with new ideas.

People with mental agility, tend to have lower rates of Alzheimer’s disease and other age related mental decline.

 3. Give and Receive

If you are the kind of person who is always giving and not receiving, you can burn out and suffer from compassion fatigue. Learn to give to yourself and also receive from others.

 4. Yoga and Meditation

Regular practice of Yoga offers all kinds of mental and physical benefits. Some of them are flexibility, muscle tone, strength, joint health, mental calmness and stress reduction.

Meditation is also great for mental calmness, stress reduction, lowers blood pressure, decreases any tension related pain and improves the immune system.

 5. Water

Make sure that you stay properly hydrated throughout the day. Food provides approximately 20% of your water intake, the rest should come from drinking at least 8 – 10 glasses of water a day.

 6. Exercise

Try and exercise every day, this doesn’t mean that you have to go to the gym daily, include physical activities that get you moving. Things like walking the dog, washing your car, housework, gardening, etc. Try and visit the gym about 3 times a week. The benefits of exercising include, an increased life-span, weight loss, strength, increased bone density, stress relief, increased energy level, etc.

 7. Skin

Look after your skin, make sure to drink lots of water to keep it hydrated. Apply a moisturiser and lotion daily. If you are going to be out in the sun, make sure to apply a sunscreen.

 8. Sugar

Decrease you sugar intake significantly. The number of people suffering from type 2 diabetes is on the increase and the age at which it sets in is also getting lower. More than 80% of type 2 diabetics die of heart disease.

 9. Sleep

Make sure you are getting enough sleep every night. Your body and mind require enough time to rest and recharge.

 10. Love Yourself

How much do you love yourself on a scale of 1-10? A good place to start, is to stop comparing yourself to others. See your own beauty, do things that make you happy, forgive yourself and focus on the positive.
